The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Nairobi, will host the final of the much-anticipated 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on August 30, marking a historic moment for Kenyan football.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the decision in a statement on Thursday, stating that the 55,000-seater stadium had been chosen to stage the climax of the continent’s second-tier football tournament, which is exclusively reserved for players competing in their domestic leagues.
The CHAN tournament, which was postponed from its original 2024 schedule, will now take place from August 2 to 30, 2025, and will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
CAF noted that after extensive consultations with the three host nations, it had agreed on the venues for the opening match, the third-place playoff, and the final.
Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam will kick off the tournament on August 2, while Uganda’s Mandela National Stadium in Kampala will host the third-place match. Group stage games will be spread across the four host cities.
The tournament will feature 19 teams drawn from across the continent, with matches being staged in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, and Zanzibar.
CAF confirmed that the group stage will proceed across the designated cities, while the final will bring the tournament’s attention to Kenya’s capital.
The announcement is being hailed as a significant boost for Kenyan sports, both in terms of visibility and infrastructure, especially given that the country last hosted a major continental football final over four decades ago.
CHAN, a biennial tournament, offers a unique platform for local talent by limiting participation to players who play in their national leagues, thus highlighting the depth and development of domestic football across Africa.
CAF is expected to release further information in the coming days regarding the full match schedule, ticketing details, and fan engagement programs, as East Africa prepares to welcome the continent’s football fans for what is shaping up to be a landmark tournament.
