General Service Unit (GSU) volleyball star Nicholas Matui has made a landmark move to Rwanda’s REG Volleyball Club, marking his first professional stint outside Kenya.

The 27-year-old left attacker, who was recently crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men’s league, has signed a two-year deal with the Rwandan side. His departure ends a stellar six-year tenure with GSU, during which he helped the paramilitary team clinch five league titles.

Matui, a versatile opposite hitter also adept on the outside, played a key role in guiding GSU to reclaim the 2024/2025 league title last month. His rise has been remarkable, starting from his high school days at Malava Boys in 2012, where he led the team to a national title in 2015.

Following his graduation, Matui joined the Nairobi Sewerage and Water Company men’s volleyball team in 2017, before making the jump to Kenyan volleyball powerhouse GSU in 2018. Since then, he has built a formidable reputation for his powerful spikes and game intelligence.

Born in Cheptabach Village, Uasin Gishu County, Matui now joins a growing list of Kenyan talents making waves in Rwanda, including 2023/2024 KVF MVP Dennis Eskon, Elphas Makuto, and Meldina Sande.

His move to REG is seen as a major boost for the Rwandan club as it seeks to strengthen its squad ahead of upcoming domestic and regional competitions.
