Kenyatta University Students Win Global Award

In an international tournament, Kenyan law students came out on top, defeating students from other prestigious institutions throughout the continent.

In the All Africa Competition on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Nairobi, two students from Kenyatta University came out on top.

Raphael Gitau and Gladys Nyangweso of Kenyatta University’s School of Law were named winners after outperforming students from Uganda’s Kampala International University, Rwanda’s Kigali Independent University, Ethiopia’s Bahirdar University, Nigeria’s Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, and the University of Juba (South Sudan).

The competitions required students to participate in a series of lectures and scenarios in which they were pushed to put IHL into practise through role-playing.

The grants are intended to support IHL research projects by cultivating a generation of IHL-aware individuals in order to raise awareness and interest at academic institutions across Africa.

They were praised for their understanding of international law.

In a discussion, they argued against a character’s indictment for war crimes before a judging panel made up of ICRC legal experts.

Jemma Arman, an ICRC legal advisor, praised the participants for their high standards during their presentations.

“The students tactfully debated the legal classification of the situation and principles governing the way that force can lawfully be used in times of conflict In particular we enjoyed robust legal arguments in relation to the principle of proportionality, and also command responsibility,” She stated.
