Eighteen people were hospitalized on Wednesday after eating meat from a dead cow in Songoliet village, Lemotit location, Kericho County.
The victims, who included 10 adults and 8 children, ate meat from a cow belonging to one of the villagers, which died on Sunday after being sick for some time.
According to Lemotit Location Chief Bernard Rono, the owner of the cow instructed the villagers to slaughter the animal and bury the meat, but some of them allegedly took some parts of the carcass and consumed them.
After experiencing food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea, the villagers were rushed to the Londiani sub-county hospital for treatment.
According to Kericho County Health CEC Brenda Bii, 12 of those admitted to the facility are currently in stable condition.
Ms. Bii also advised residents to avoid eating meat that has not been inspected by health officials.
Chief Rono added that the carcass had been taken to a government chemist for analysis.
