The County of Kericho is eyeing direct tea sales to the export market by establishing a local auction for the produce.
Kericho Governor Eric Mutai says the current auction in Mombasa has been overrun by brokers necessitating the proposal to set up the local auction.
According to Mutai, Counties in the Mount Kenya region are also eyeing the direct sales as they seek to improve yields to smallholder tea farmers.
Currently, Kenyan tea is sold primarily through the Mombasa auction with direct sales being limited.
