A stampede at the Kericho Green Stadium, the site of the 2023 Mashujaa Day celebrations, has killed four women and left 13 injured.
According to police, the fatal incident occurred at 3 a.m. on Friday, just hours before the stadium gates opened to the public in preparation for the national celebrations led by President William Ruto.
Police statement indicated the incident occurred after a tea vendor spilt tea on an open fire, causing panic.
“…stampede caused by a lady who was selling tea outside the stadium who accidentally spilled hot tea in the fire near gate “C” along the public road, as a result, members of public panicked and mistook it to be a teargas thrown to them,” said the police.
