Tensions are high in Kobot village, Kerio Valley, following the death of a primary school teacher in a new bandit attack yesterday afternoon.

Over 125 cows were stolen by armed attackers believed to be from neighboring Marakwet East.

When they were ambushed by the gun-wielding criminals, Kemboi Simotwo, a primary school teacher, was herding livestock belonging to six families with some children. The assailants fired shots at him.

The teacher’s death brings the total number of people killed this year to 31, with dozens more suffering from gunshot wounds.

The incident occurred just five days after three people were killed in separate bandit attacks in the same sub-county, Baringo North.

Locals told the Nation that the criminals numbered in the hundreds and had formed teams before the attack in order to avoid being repulsed.

They drove the herd to Tot in Elgeyo Marakwet County, which is nearby.

Security officers responded to the attack, but the stolen livestock was not recovered, according to Baringo County Police Commander Adamson Bungei.
