KFC Snubs Local Farmers Amid Potato Shortage

Written By Gerald Gekara | |

Due to delays in delivery from its foreign suppliers, fast-food major KFC has run out of potatoes at its Kenyan locations, forcing it to give customers alternate food items in place of French fries.

The lack of chips, as they are generally called, is due to a glitch in the worldwide supply of potatoes, according to Jacques Theunissen, the firm’s Chief Executive for East Africa.

“It has to do with shipping line delays caused by the Covid problem. Ships have been delayed for more than a month, but we are working hard to get things back on track, as the first containers are expected to arrive in the port,” Mr Theunissen added.

The company also stated that it will not be able to circumvent the approval process in order to allow local farmers to supply to fill the gap.

“The reason we can’t buy local right now is that all suppliers must go through the worldwide QA approval procedure, which we can’t skip even if we run out of to ensure that our food is safe for our clients to consume,” he explained.

Local farmers whose food goes to waste during harvesting seasons will be denied the opportunity to profit from attractive contracts, especially amid shortages like now.

It’s also unclear why it took the corporation over a decade to vet local farmers.
