Kiambu County Pushes for Thika’s Upgrade to City Status

Today, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi led a strong case before the Senate on why Thika Municipality should be elevated to an industrial smart city.

In addition to its strategic location and historical significance as a hub for industrialization, Governor Wamatangi highlighted the town’s infrastructure, availability of expansion space, and ongoing development projects in roads, water, sanitation, health, and trade.

There is a general consensus that Thika once known as the Birmingham of Kenya is ready for city status.

Governor Wamatangi led a delegation comprising members of the county executive, the ad hoc committee overseeing the process, and Members of the County Assembly.

They appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Devolution, which is currently processing the matter following its approval by the County Assembly of Kiambu.
