Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina recently expressed his heartfelt forgiveness towards those who looted and destroyed his supermarkets in Nyeri and Nanyuki during anti-government protests.
The incidents took place on June 25, resulting in a staggering loss of Sh567 million across three retail outlets.
One supermarket in Nanyuki, which is part of a four-storey building owned by Wainaina, was not only looted but also set ablaze.
Despite the chaos, detectives have apprehended 16 suspects related to the incident, with some found in possession of stolen goods.
Their case currently awaits trial in a Nanyuki court. At the reopening ceremony of one Chieni supermarket, Wainaina emphasized the importance of forgiveness, believing the attackers acted out of criminal intent rather than political motivations.
“We have forgiven those who destroyed our business,” he stated, reflecting on his family’s decision amid the turmoil.
While he chose not to comment further on the legal proceedings against the suspects, Wainaina affirmed that the unfortunate events would not obstruct his commitment to serving his constituents.
The MP’s business was severely impacted following his support for the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which faced widespread public backlash.
The damaged section of his Nanyuki building has been demolished, with rebuilding efforts scheduled to take several months.
On the supermarket’s reopening day, eager shoppers flocked to the store, causing long queues and forcing management to temporarily close entrances for crowd control.
Wainaina, who has yet to receive any compensation from the government or insurance, revealed he resorted to bank loans to finance the rehabilitation efforts, demonstrating his resilience and dedication to rebuilding his enterprise.
