Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai Accused of Demanding Ksh 500,000 from Billboard Businessman

Activist Maverick Aoko has accused Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai of extorting 500,000 Kenyan shillings from businessman Adan.

According to a statement on X, Aoko said this payment was made to the vocal MCA to allow erection of new billboards in the Nairobi’s Kileleshwa neighborhood.

“Robert Alai has graduated from stealing Mattresses to full blown Extortion! Latest victims include businessman called Adan who deals in Billboards. Before any Billboard goes up, hiyo area ya Kileleleshwa, guy must part with something. B’coz Alai supports Ruto, haezi guzwa!” she posted on X.

Aoko went ahead to share an audio clip of Alai interrupting Adan and insisting on payment.

However, Alai denied the allegations, announcing the removal of four illegal billboards in the area, and urged legal action over social media complaints.

The incident reflects ongoing disputes over billboard regulations in Nairobi and Alai’s history of controversies.

The vocal legislator has been accusing rogue officers from the police, the County Government of Nairobi City and advertising companies of colluding to erect commercial billboards in the said zones without county approval.

On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Alai revealed that he held talks with the Nairobi County officials over the same, insisting that the ‘thuggery has to end’.

“I have told the team from Johnson Sakaja’s administration, led by Planning Chief Officer Patrick Analo and Assistant Director Dan Nasengo, to remove all billboards from Kileleshwa. The thuggery has to end. Billboard owners like Magnate, Sharks, ADsite, Live AD and Look Media have to operate within the law or find elsewhere to cause chaos,” Robert Aalai took to X.
