Kilifi Deputy Governor detained for three nights awaiting bail ruling

Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi will be forced to spend three more nights in custody awaiting his bail ruling for defying COVID-19 self quarantine directives.

Saburi was arraigned in a Mombasa court earlier today where the magistrate ordered the magistrate ordered that he be held at Port Police Station until Thursday.

The prosecution opposed Saburi’s release on bail arguing that Kilifi residents were angered by the Deputy Governor’s actions and a mob justice could pounce on him once he returns to Kilifi.

The Prosecution therefore proposed that it would be safe if Saburi is detained at Manyani Maximum prison for 14 days pending completion of investigations.

Saburi through his lawyer, however opposed the prosecutions arguments saying that detaining him for 14 days would be illegal as he has not been charged yet.

Saburi further told the court that there is also no evidence of anger by Kilifi residents towards him saying the 14 days police are seeking to detain him he will be in self-quarantine anyway as directed upon his discharge hence he will not interfere with investigations in any way.
