Kilifi Schools’ Meal Programme Halted Over Forced Religious Practices

The Kilifi County government has suspended a school feeding programme in 17 Ganze schools after reports emerged that pupils were being made to recite Hindu prayers before receiving meals.

County Commissioner Josephat Kibiwott said the move came after reviewing videos showing students performing prayers under pressure, which authorities described as inappropriate and unethical.

“This foundation was supplying food in a way that we cannot accept. Assistance should never come with coercion or force,” Kibiwott said.

The feeding initiative, active since 2019, reportedly introduced the prayer requirement only this term. Teachers from the affected schools were reportedly called to Mombasa during the August holiday for a meeting that led to the new practice.

Following a thorough review with the County Education Team, officials confiscated several religious materials in the schools as investigations continue.

The viral footage, shared widely on social media, sparked public criticism after showing head teachers directing pupils to perform prayers before meals.

While the suspension aims to protect students’ welfare, concerns remain for learners in drought stricken Ganze who depend on the school meals. County authorities say alternative arrangements are being explored to ensure students still receive food.
