Ferrero, the Italian confectionery company that creates Kinder Joy chocolate, has been placed on notice in Kenya after some of its popular chocolate products were pulled from store shelves in Europe due to health concerns.
According to Business Daily, samples of the Italian firm’s products marketed in Kenya will be examined for safety by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) before a decision is made.
“We’ll take samples for testing to make sure they’re fine,” Bernard Njiraini, managing director of Kebs, told Business Daily.
After the Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs were connected to a Salmonella outbreak across Europe, including Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands, European authorities withdrew Ferrero’s products.
Consumers should avoid using specific batches of Kinder Surprise products, according to the UK’s food safety watchdog (FSA).
People should avoid eating 20g or three-pack eggs with best before dates between July 11 and October 7, 2022, according to the report.
There have been no deaths reported, but 63 salmonella cases have been detected among children aged five and under, according to the BBC.
