The Kenya National Union of Nurses, Kirinyaga branch, has dismissed Governor Ann Waiguru’s claim that 72 sacked health workers have been reinstated.
According to Karigi, the branch union secretary general, Governor Waiguru did not reinstate any sacked health workers.
Ms. Karigi claims that the county boss instead paid the 72 health workers who had been working without pay for three years.
“What she did is play Public relations stunts the last few days to elections as the issue has become so emotive on the ground,” she said.
Ms. Karigi stated that Wiguru refused to reinstate 388 health workers who had been ordered back to work by the Public Service Commission.
“She is using the group to hoodwink the voters thinking it will salvage her sinking career,” she said.
Governor Waiguru said on Wednesday in her Kagio home that she had reinstated 72 suspended health workers and renewed contracts for 388 others.
She also stated that she had agreed to pay their salary arrears dating back to 2019, when they were suspended due to a strike.
A section of Kirinyaga leaders, however, slammed the move, claiming that she is playing politics just days before the August General Elections in order to keep her seat.
Chomba Ndau and Wangui Ngirici, both candidates for governor, were among them.
“It is an insult to the highly educated, well experienced and industrious healthcare staff who had to endure physical, emotional, psychological and economic maelstrom for three years,” Ndau said.
Meanwhile, the nurses union has stated that the 388 health workers who were fired by Waiguru are still in court protesting their unlawful dismissal.
