Alfred Ndemo, the running mate of Kisii Kenya National Congress governor candidate Manson Oyongo, has defected.
On Wednesday, Ndemo jumped ship to ODM’s Simba Arati camp.
Ndemo announced his departure at a rally in Kitutu Chache North.
The rising popularity of the ODM party, he claimed, influenced his decision to join Arati.
“I, Alfred Ndemo, swear before God that I will be faithful to Arati’s government-to-be and we will make our county great. God help Mr Arati to help win this election,” he said after a meeting at his Kitutu Chache North home.
He also promised to actively campaign for his newfound political ally in the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya alliance.
“We have vowed today as Bogetutu that we will not split our votes. And even those of us who are elsewhere are pleading with you to join this ship. We will not insult you, but come back home and let us join hands and vote for Arati,” the politician added.
However, Oyongo stated that he heard about Ndemo’s defection on the radio. He did, however, dismiss the defection as ‘insignificant.’
He claims it will have no impact on his chances of winning the election next month.
“Some of you may think I will be affected, but it is not so. I will only miss his vote and nothing else. My support base remains intact,” Oyongo said.
According to the KNC leader, the defection occurred late in the day, when the IEBC could not remove Ndemo’s name as Oyongo’s running mate.
“His details are already captured on the ballot as my bona fide running mate. His name will be there and if I win, he will choose to be sworn in with me or completely move out of my camp. He is still my running mate, at least on paper,” Oyongo said.
