Kisumu International Airport is being upgraded by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to increase passenger capacity.
A contemporary passenger terminal will be built at the airport as part of the Sh. 240 million improvement, increasing capacity from 250, 000 to 500, 000 passengers per year.
According to KAA Managing Director (MD) Alex Gitari, the project has been assigned to a qualified contractor who will complete it within 90 days before the 9th Africities conference, which will be held in Kisumu from May 17 to 23, 2022.
As the aviation sector recovers from the Covid-19 outbreak, the modern terminal building will increase the airport’s capacity to accommodate domestic and international aircraft, he noted.
Gitari instructed the contractor to stick to the schedule during the project’s ground breaking ceremony to guarantee that it is completed on time.
The project, according to Devolution Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Korir, is one of many preparations the government has made to ensure the success of the Africities conference.
Others, he said, included the continuing construction of the Africities Convention Center in Mamboleo and the tarmacing of the Mamboleo-Uriri-Airport road to facilitate passenger mobility from the airport to the conference location.
He stated that the projects were on track and that they will all be completed and handed over before the conference.
