Kindiki Plans To Make Chiefs Powerful

The government has proposed new security measures for over 6,000 chiefs to reinforce their job, increase grassroots security, and help in intelligence collection.

Under the new arrangement, all chiefs would have at least five armed police officers at their disposal to help them in preserving peace and order. At least 30,000 cops will be deployed to local chiefs around the country.

Kindiki Kithure, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, revealed the additional restrictions during an unplanned visit to the Mtwapa chief’s office in Kilifi.

Mr Kithure feels that chiefs should be empowered and given greater responsibility to ensure security, especially in communities. However, he cautioned them from harassing and bullying innocent bystanders.

He also warned them not to engage in politics, but rather to use their positions to communicate positive things about the government and its policies and programs, as well as to educate the public about them.

According to him, the administrators will educate Kenyans on the importance of tree planting, immunization, civil registration programs, and 100% transition to the next level for students.

He stated that while state officers will be supported and empowered, they must also be efficient.

He assured chiefs, their assistants, and other national government administrators at the grassroots of the state’s support, adding that their working conditions would be improved so that they could work effectively.
