The Catholic Diocese of Kitui recently came together to celebrate its annual Diocesan Education Day at St. John’s Kwa Mulungu Secondary School.
Today’s theme was “Catholic Schools: Hubs of Foundational Learning and Integral Formation for Holistic Growth.”
Inspired by Proverbs 22:6, “Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life,” the celebration aimed to emphasize the importance of education and the role that Catholic schools play in shaping the minds and characters of young people.
Apostolic Nuncio’s Homily
His Excellency Hubertus van Megen, the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, was the chief guest and main celebrant of the Mass.
In his homily, he emphasized the importance of using the gifts God has given wisely, including the gift of life.

He reminded students of the sacrifices their parents have made to provide them with an education and urged them not to disappoint their families.
He also highlighted the crucial role of teachers, saying, “Sometimes teachers know you better than you do and know how best to guide you. Be grateful to them, for in gratitude, God grants more because He loves you.”
The Nuncio also advised students to avoid anything that could jeopardize their education, including unnecessary relationships.
He stressed that teachers have a responsibility to mold students into better citizens, fostering mature men and women who can create a peaceful and harmonious society.

Encouragement to Contribute Positively
The Apostolic Nuncio encouraged the youth to contribute positively to the development of society and country.
He posed reflective questions, such as “What kind of society would you like to leave to your children, and how can you contribute to its development? What values do you hold? What direction will you take? What are you able to give? How much sacrifice are you willing to make?”
Who Attended?
In addition to His Excellency Hubertus van Megen, other notable attendees included Bishop Mwongela, Assistant Monsignor Luciano Lubanga, the Diocesan Education Secretary, clergy, religious, and other dignitaries.

The Diocesan Education Day celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of education in shaping the lives of young people and preparing them for their roles in society.
The Catholic Church plays a vital role in providing quality education that not only equips students with knowledge but also forms them into responsible and compassionate individuals.
