At the time of his death, he was serving at St. Patrick’s Parish, Nguni.

Deacon Denis Maithya was ordained to the diaconate on December 8, 2025, barely weeks before his death.

He was the son of Boniface Maithya Kisungi and Cecilia Muia Maithya and hailed from St. Paul’s–Kasyala Parish.

He was the third-born in a family of five children.

His early education was at Kyeni Primary School, where he studied from 2001 to 2010, before joining WeaverBird High School in Kitale for his secondary education between 2011 and 2014.

He later joined St. Mary’s Propaedeutic Seminary in Molo for his spiritual year from 2016 to 2017.

From 2017 to 2020, he undertook philosophical studies at St. Augustine’s Senior Seminary in Mabanga.

Deacon Maithya proceeded to St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Nairobi, where he pursued theological studies from 2021 to 2025.

He graduated from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) on October 24, 2025.

During his formation as a seminarian, he undertook pastoral work in several parishes, including Ikutha, Kabati, Miambani, Katutu, Mutomo, Nuu, Nguni and Museve parishes.

The Diocese expressed condolences to his family, relatives, fellow clergy and the faithful, and called for prayers for the repose of his soul.

“May he rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.
