A tense situation unfolded in Kyandula, Kitui County on Sunday as residents took to the streets to demand action after a nine-year-old child was tragically killed by a speeding car.

The incident occurred when a speeding vehicle struck and killed the minor.

In response, residents barricaded the Kibwezi-Kitui road, blocking it with stones, tree stumps, and twigs at the Kyandula shopping center.

They waited for police officers from Mutomo to arrive and collect the body of the child.

“It was a chaotic scene,” said eyewitnesses. “The residents were visibly shaken by the incident and were demanding justice. The police had to use teargas to disperse the crowd.”

Ikutha sub-county deputy commissioner Vincent Loctary confirmed the incident, stating that the road was eventually opened and the body of the minor was taken to the Mutomo Sub County Hospital mortuary.

The motorist involved in the accident is currently in police custody, awaiting his arraignment on Monday.
