Kitui Unveils Bold Tourism Agenda in State of the County Address

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has spotlighted tourism and hospitality as a key pillar of economic transformation in the county, outlining a comprehensive strategy to unlock the sector’s potential in his State of the County Address delivered at the County Assembly Chambers on July 8.

Governor Malombe announced the upcoming launch of the Kitui Tourism Circuit, developed in collaboration with the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), aimed at connecting Kitui’s cultural, ecological, and scenic attractions to Kenya’s broader tourism network. The circuit is set to be officially launched on Friday, October 17, 2025, and is expected to boost visitor numbers and promote investment in the county’s diverse tourism offerings.

“Our rich cultural heritage, unique landscapes, and ecological treasures present enormous opportunities,” the governor said. “We are committed to transforming Kitui into a premier tourism destination.”

Mutomo Reptile Park and Wildlife Conservation

Among the flagship projects is the Mutomo Reptile Park, which is nearing full operational status following the completion of critical infrastructure including a snake house, crocodile pen, snake pit, and research habitats. The park is envisioned as a centre for eco-tourism, research, breeding, and venom extraction.

To strengthen conservation efforts, the county has deployed 37 game rangers to protect vital sites including the South Kitui Game Reserve, Mwingi Game Reserve, Kalundu Eco-Park, and Mutomo Reptile Park. Renovation works have also been completed at Kalundu Eco-Park, Masyungwa entrance gate, and Kalalani Rangers Camp.

Additionally, the county drilled and solarised Kaningo and Kalalani boreholes and graded 15 kilometers of road from Masyungwa Gate to Kora National Park to improve access to conservation zones.

Upcoming Hospitality Training Institution

In a bid to build capacity for the growing tourism sector, Kitui is in advanced talks with the Utalii College Board to establish the South Eastern Utalii College at Tiva. Once operational, the institution will provide world-class training in hospitality and tourism, creating employment and professional development opportunities for local youth.

Addressing Tourism Sector Challenges

Despite the progress, the governor acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly the encroachment of protected areas and human-wildlife conflict near game reserves. He affirmed that the county is working closely with national agencies to implement sustainable, community-led solutions that balance conservation and livelihoods.

Governor Malombe concluded by reiterating his administration’s commitment to leveraging tourism for inclusive economic growth, job creation, and environmental conservation. “Tourism is not just about attracting visitors; it is about preserving our heritage and empowering our people,” he said.
