Kenya Maritime Authority has this day met Pioneer University officials over plans to provide quality training for upcoming maritime engineers. – By Gerald Gekara.
The meeting, led by Director General Mr. Robert Njue said the developments in providing maritime education and training will be in line with the sector’s plan for the Blue Economy.
The authority is seeking to upgrade key courses offered in maritime institutions to International Maritime Organization (IMO) course standards.
Currently, Kenya offers maritime education through the Bandari Maritime Academy, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), and Pioneer International University.
The institutions work on the National Seafarers Training Curriculum developed in partnership with the Kenya Institute of Education (KIE) and the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
The efforts are seen as a big plus for the youth to take up marine and shipping courses.
The KMA has spearheaded other initiatives such as the Vijana Baharia Loan. This facilitation in partnership with the Youth Enterprise Fund, has been developed to facilitate young people to take up opportunities in the shipping and maritime sector.
