KMPDU Announces Redeployment of Kiambu Medical Interns

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced that 697 healthcare professional interns posted in Kiambu County have been redeployed.

In a statement on Sunday, September 28, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah said the interns should collect their redeployment letters from the Ministry of Health from Monday, September 29, at 9:00 AM.

The redeployment of interns follows a four-month doctors’ strike in Kiambu County, which has delayed the start of their internship programme.

“All interns currently in Kiambu County are therefore required to collect the redeployment letters from the MoH effective tomorrow, September 29, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. As the strike in Kiambu is now in its fourth month with no end in sight, there is an urgent need to protect the sanctity of the internship, and it should not be affected prolonged county strikes,” read the statement in part.

Atellah warned the interns that failure to collect their redeployment letters would be deemed as absconding duty.

“Therefore, failure to collect the redeployment letter and move will be deemed abscondment of your internship duty by the MoH,” Atellah added.

The 697 interns comprise 138 Medical Officer Interns, 48 Pharmacist Interns, 5 Dentist Interns, 297 BSc Nursing Interns, 134 Clinical Officer (Diploma) Interns, and 75 Clinical Officer (Degree) Interns.

On August 26, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced that the ministry would redeploy the interns if the doctors’ strike in Kiambu County is not resolved.

Duale explained that the measure is necessary to safeguard the interns’ training, facilitate the timely progression of their programme, and keep them aligned with their peers nationwide.

“This prolonged delay has caused considerable concern among the affected interns, particularly given that their counterparts deployed to other counties have already commenced training.

“In light of the foregoing, this letter serves to formally notify you that, should the prevailing industrial action in Kiambu County remain unresolved, the Ministry of Health will be compelled to recall all 697 interns posted to public internship centres in the County, with effect from 15th September, 2025, for redistribution to alternative stations,” Duale stated.

The 2025/2026 cohort of healthcare professional interns began their twelve-month internship programme on July 1, 2025.
