KMPDU Threatens Nationwide Protests Over Salary Delays and Lack of Insurance

    The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, threatening protests if their demands are not met. 

    Addressing journalists in Nairobi, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah accused the government of failing to address the persistent salary delays affecting healthcare workers.

    Atellah highlighted that many health workers across several counties are struggling with meagre or delayed salaries, despite government promises of pay hikes. 

    “These delays have caused immense suffering. Workers can’t pay their rent, fuel their cars, or meet daily needs,” he stated.

    The union is also demanding immediate issuance of medical insurance for all health workers, citing severe risks faced by those on duty.

     Atellah criticised the government’s failure to provide insurance as “gross negligence.”

    Additionally, KMPDU officials accused county governments of failing to remit statutory deductions to the revenue authority, leaving workers unable to service loans or access benefits. 

    In some cases, deductions have not been remitted for up to two years.
