The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is mourning the untimely demise of its Chairperson, Roseline Odhiambo Odede, who has died at the age of 58 after a short illness.
Her death, announced on Friday, January 3, 2025, has sent shockwaves across the nation.
“It is with shock and deep sorrow that I inform you of the demise of Roseline Odhiambo Odede, HSC,” said KNCHR Vice Chairperson Raymond Nyeris.
The commission described her death as a significant loss to the institution and the nation.
Odede, a celebrated human rights advocate, dedicated over 30 years to fighting for justice and equality.
She specialized in human rights law, often offering pro-bono services to marginalized communities.
Leaders and citizens alike mourned her passing. Rarieda MP Otiende Omollo honored her courage, calling her “a strong leader.”
Homa Bay MP Peter Kaluma lamented, “What a loss to the Nation!” Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris praised her as “a fierce advocate for human rights,” while former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi lauded her “intelligent, civil, and sober legal mind.”
A holder of a Master of Laws from the University of Witwatersrand, Odede previously served as Vice Chair of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board.
Her legacy as a champion for human rights will endure.
