KNEC Breaks Silence After Claims Of Unpaid KCSE Examiners’ Allowances

By John Mutiso

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has denied claims of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examiners leaving marking centres without being paid their allowances.

In a statement on Sunday, December 14, KNEC clarified that all KCSE examiners who had completed the marking exercise and exited the centres had been fully paid their dues.

“Our attention has been drawn to reports that some 2025 KCSE examiners have left the marking centres without being paid their coordination fees. We wish to clarify as follows:

“All examiners who have completed the marking exercise and left the marking centres have been fully paid their coordination dues,” read the KNEC statement in part.

The council went on to list KCSE papers whose examiners have already received payment. This includes Physics Paper 2, Biology Paper 2, Agriculture Paper 1, Chemistry Paper 3, Biology Paper 1, Agriculture Paper 2, Computer Studies Paper 2, and Biology Paper 3.

Further, KNEC assured examiners still engaged in the marking process that they will receive all their marking allowances before they leave the marking centres.

“All examiners for all papers will be paid the coordination fees before they leave the marking centres,” the council added.

The clarification comes after English Paper 2 examiners at the Mary Hill Girls High School staged protests on Sunday, protesting the failure by KNEC to pay their coordination allowances.

According to the examiners, the council is yet to pay their dues since they began marking the KCSE papers weeks ago.

The demonstration by the examiners brought the marking process to a standstill at Mary Hill Girls High School, with the examiners vowing not to resume work until they are paid.

The KCSE examiners are supposed to be paid a total of Ksh5,000 each in coordination allowances.

The Ministry of Education conducted the 2025 KCSE exams from October 21, 2025, to November 21, 2025.

A total of 996,078 candidates sat for the 2025 KCSE exams, with the results expected to be released in January 2026.
