In a bid to press their demands, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is contemplating a strike just before the start of the third school term.
KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu announced this potential industrial action during a press briefing at the Union’s offices on August 6, 2024.
Oyuu criticized the government for failing to implement the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA), which was due for payment in July 2024.
“It is in the public domain that all is not well in the teaching fraternity,” Oyuu stated. “The agreement documented in law has not been respected, which is why teachers are upset.”
The union has formally requested a meeting with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on August 7, 2024, to address their grievances.
A strike notice has also been issued to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour.
If discussions fail, KNUT plans to seek approval from its national executive council for a nationwide strike.
Oyuu expressed frustration over unremitted deductions affecting teachers and questioned the government’s commitment to honoring the CBA agreement.
