Athletics Kenya (AK) Nairobi branch chairman Barnaba Korir has expressed strong confidence that Team Kenya is well prepared and poised to deliver a standout performance at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Speaking on Citizen TV, Korir praised athletes’ preparations and told Kenyans the team had done the hard work needed to compete for medals, even suggesting the nation could better its ten-medal haul from Budapest.
He added that travel arrangements were complete and that the squad would depart in two batches to ensure athletes settle in comfortably. Korir also reassured the public that every athlete had undergone multiple doping tests ahead of departure.
Athletics Kenya named a 58-member squad to represent the country in Tokyo after competitive national trials, blending experienced stars with promising newcomers. The roster includes household names expected to contend for medals, and AK officials say the team combines depth across middle- and long-distance events.
Selectors have mixed seasoned campaigners with fresh talent to bolster Kenya’s chances. Reports note first-time call-ups such as Faith Cherotich, Phanuel Koech, and Edmund Serem, who join established contenders giving the squad a balance of youth and experience that coaches hope will translate into podium finishes.
AK has finalized preparatory plans including residential camps and targeted tune-ups to sharpen form ahead of the championships. Team officials and sports administrators have emphasized the importance of logistical readiness travel, accommodation and training facilities—to ensure athletes arrive in peak condition.
With stars like Faith Kipyegon and other world-class performers leading the charge, expectations are high. Korir urged Kenyans to rally behind the team, saying public support helps motivate athletes to perform on the global stage.
As the delegation departs for Tokyo this week, Kenya’s athletics fraternity will be watching closely for what could be another memorable championship campaign.
