KRA: 6.3 Million Kenyans Filed Their Taxes Before Deadline

Over 6.3 million Kenyans successfully reached the deadline for filing their tax returns by midnight on Friday, June 30th, 2023, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has confirmed.

This figure represents a substantial 14.5% increase compared to the previous year, with 5.5 million returns filed in 2021.

According to KRA, several factors contributed to this notable achievement, including the early release of P9 forms by employers, which facilitated a smoother filing process for taxpayers.

KRA also stated that individuals took proactive measures to fulfil their return filing obligations, demonstrating a growing awareness of their responsibilities.

The success in meeting tax obligations can also be attributed to the collaborative efforts between KRA and various stakeholders, such as government agencies, community leaders, business member organizations, religious institutions, and academic establishments.

Through these partnerships, off-site filing support was implemented making it more convenient for taxpayers to submit their returns.

“6.3 million Kenyans met the deadline for filing their tax returns by midnight (June 30th Friday, 2023). This represents a 14.5% growth compared to returns filed in the previous year of income, 2021 which stood at 5.5M,” KRA announced.

“Some of the success drivers include: Early release of P9 forms by employers, taxpayers consistently taking the initiative to comply with their return filing obligations, a collaboration between KRA and various stakeholders including,” KRA added.

Expressing their appreciation, the KRA lauded taxpayers for their dedication and participation in meeting their tax obligations.

The agency views this collective effort as a demonstration of patriotism and encouraged individuals to continue embracing such responsible behaviour in the upcoming financial year.

KRA also issued a reminder to the public regarding the consequences of failing to file income tax returns by the stipulated due date.

Individuals who missed the deadline are subject to penalties of either Ksh2,000 or 5% of the tax due, whichever is higher.
