The Kremlin said on Friday it would support U.S. President Donald Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his efforts to end the war in Ukraine, Russian state news agency TASS reported.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Russia would “certainly back” Trump’s candidature for the prestigious award, adding that Moscow appreciates his stated commitment to pursuing peace in the region.
“The Russian side has said repeatedly that it is grateful for President Trump’s efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine,” Ushakov was quoted as saying.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner is set to be announced at 0900 GMT, but seasoned observers of the Nobel Committee say Trump’s chances are highly unlikely, given the political sensitivities surrounding his relationship with Moscow and his controversial foreign policy record.
Trump has long expressed interest in winning the Nobel Peace Prize, previously claiming he deserved it for his diplomacy with North Korea and Middle East peace initiatives.
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv would consider nominating Trump for the Nobel Prize if he succeeded in brokering a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, a conflict now entering its fourth year.
The comments from both Moscow and Kyiv come as Trump continues to pitch himself as a potential peace negotiator, vowing to “end the war within 24 hours” if reelected, a claim viewed skeptically by many Western analysts.
