Ksh 1.8 Million Worth of Cannabis Seized in Samburu as Police Foil Trafficking Attempt

A joint security operation in Samburu County has led to the seizure of cannabis sativa worth Ksh 1.88 million, following a public tip-off that helped authorities thwart a suspected drug trafficking attempt.

The multi-agency team, comprising officers from Archers Post Police Station, National Police Reservists (NPR), and Samburu National Reserve rangers, acted swiftly after residents reported a suspicious white Toyota Probox traveling from Isiolo to Marsabit near the Waso Nyiro River.

According to police, witnesses saw armed individuals unloading luggage from the vehicle and pushing it toward the river. When the security team arrived at the scene, the suspects opened fire, prompting a brief gunfight. The attackers, however, managed to escape into the surrounding bush.

A thorough search of the area led to the recovery of two green sacks containing yellow and grey cello-tape-wrapped bundles suspected to be cannabis. The consignment, weighing approximately 62.65 kilograms, was secured as evidence.

The street value of the recovered narcotics is estimated at Ksh 1,879,500, police confirmed.

Investigations are ongoing, and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects. The National Police Service (NPS) has urged members of the public to report any information that could assist in their arrest.

This operation comes amid a broader nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking and abuse, with similar arrests and drug seizures reported recently in Kilifi and Nairobi, where suspects were found with illicit drugs and brews intended for distribution.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying efforts to combat narcotics and safeguard communities, especially in regions vulnerable to trafficking routes.
