Just a day after the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) called off a national strike that lasted two weeks, internal rifts have emerged within the union.
Several KUPPET officials from Central, Western, Rift Valley, and Nyanza regions have accused Secretary General Akello Misori of betraying the union’s members by unilaterally ending the strike without following proper procedures.
During a press conference in Kisumu on Tuesday, the disgruntled officials demanded Misori’s immediate resignation, claiming that his decision was not in the best interest of the teachers.
They asserted that the strike is still ongoing, despite Misori’s announcement, and challenged him to produce the minutes that show the decision to call off the strike was properly ratified.
“We have not called off the strike. The strike is still on. Give us the minutes that show us that we called off the strike,” said Joseph Abicha, KUPPET’s Kisii Branch Secretary General.
The teachers criticized Misori for failing to consult the National Governing Council (NGC) before making any agreements with the government.
They apologized to parents for the disruption but maintained that they would continue their industrial action until all their demands are met.
Misori had announced the strike’s suspension to allow the government time to address the union’s concerns.
