Kwale Man Sentenced to Seven Years in Prison for Drug Possession

A man in Kwale County has been sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking charges involving bhang possession. The accused, Salim Mwamatezo, was convicted on his own plea before Kwale Resident Magistrate Ruth Ogollo on Friday.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Mwamatezo admitted to possessing 50 large rolls of bhang, 99 cut cubes, and 49 cigarette-sized rolls, with an estimated street value of KSh 40,000.

During the proceedings, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Collins Orwa urged the accused to reconsider his plea, warning him of the serious legal consequences. However, the accused remained steadfast, and after three additional mentions of the case, the court proceeded to sentencing.

Magistrate Ogollo granted Mwamatezo the option of paying a fine of KSh 1 million. Should he fail to raise the amount, he will serve the full seven-year prison term.

A pre-sentence report presented in court painted a troubling picture of the accused. Mwamatezo was described as a notorious drug dealer in his village who repeatedly ignored warnings from local authorities, including the area chief and village chairman. He reportedly claimed to be untouchable due to alleged protection from certain police officers.

The report further indicated that Mwamatezo’s residence had become a hideout for criminal gangs, contributing to rising insecurity and fear among local residents.

The conviction marks a significant move in the fight against narcotics and organized crime in the region, as authorities continue to crack down on illegal drug networks and associated criminal activity.
