Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua has condemned the tragic death of Ms. Zeituni Kavayo, a domestic worker in Kilimani, Nairobi, who reportedly died following harassment and abuse by her employer.

In a statement on Thursday, Dr. Mutua expressed deep shock and sadness at the incident, describing it as a reflection of the persistent exploitation and discrimination faced by low-ranking workers in Kenya.

“This heartbreaking incident deprives workers of their dignity and is both unlawful and unacceptable. It must come to an end,” the CS said while extending condolences to Ms. Kavayo’s family, friends, and colleagues.

The Ministry confirmed that investigations into the circumstances of Ms. Kavayo’s death are underway, with the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations already engaged. ]

The CS assured the public that those found culpable will face justice without delay.

Dr. Mutua reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of domestic workers, noting that Kenya is at an advanced stage of finalizing instruments for the ratification of International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions No. 189 and 190, which provide stronger protections against workplace abuse and harassment.

“All employers, including those who engage domestic workers, have a legal and moral duty to treat all workers with fairness and respect,” he stressed, adding that domestic workers must be afforded the same protections as all other categories of workers.

The CS called on government, employers, workers, and society at large to unite in creating safe workplaces free from abuse, harassment, and violence.

“The tragic loss of Ms. Zeituni must not be in vain,” Dr. Mutua stated.
