Written By Lisa Murimi

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has named James Gichu as the new deputy governor, filling the position left vacant after the death of Raphael Munyua Ndung’u.

Ndung’u passed away on September 6, 2024, while receiving treatment in Nairobi.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, October 16, at the County Headquarters in Mokowe Town.

As required by law, Governor Timamy has forwarded Gichu’s name to the County Assembly for vetting and approval.

According to the County Governments Act, the deputy governor’s role is vital in supporting the governor’s functions, making this a crucial decision for the county.

James Gichu, who previously served as County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Food Security, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

He oversaw agricultural projects in Lamu, including irrigation efforts, and managed grain stores across the county.

Gichu also has a strong background in engineering, having worked with Kenya Power and the Kenya Ports Authority.

In his acceptance, Gichu thanked Governor Timamy for the opportunity and vowed to work diligently to improve the lives of Lamu residents.

The County Assembly’s approval will officially confirm him as deputy governor.
