Residents residing in the Highrise and Kibera areas have lauded the planned network of pedestrian footbridges designed to alleviate stress in crossing the Langata and Mbagathi roads.
The project, part of the Lang’ata overpass phenomenon is set to minimize the number of deaths reported as pedestrians attempt to cross the busy highway.
Ong’ori, a fruit seller on the Mbagathi way stage could not tell a single day that had gone without an accident involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian on the busy highway.
“It has been hectic working here. Every other day there is an accident to a point which ambulances are on standby at the roundabout.” he lamented.
Lang’ata traffic police manning the key road have also noted the pedestrian insecurity on the roads has seen many lose their lives due to the poor pedestrian facilities on the roads.
The Lang’ata overpass project will see the construction of footbridges set up at the T-Mall Flyover on Lang’ata Road, Mbagathi Way and at Nyayo Stadium.
“This will really help the people who cross here because this road is big and we cannot fault drivers for having their right of way then end up causing jams. We cant wait to see these footbridges.” Ong’ori added.
The Ksh. 3 billion road will relieve pressure and the requirement for vehicles to navigate the roundabout while traveling to the city center and vice versa, thanks to safety walls currently in place along with the project’s mandate.
The project is being carried out under the framework of an EPC/Turnkey Contract, which was signed between KeNHA and the Contractor.
The project is expected to be completed in 36 months and will help to strengthen cooperation between the Kenyan and Spanish governments.
