On Thursday, October 9, 2025, CNN correspondent Larry Madowo blocked a vehicle carrying Kibra MP Peter Orero in Nairobi after observing it driving on the wrong side of a busy road.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral, shows Orero seated in the front passenger seat as his driver allegedly tries to force their way past other motorists.
Madowo refused to yield, telling the MP’s vehicle that it was flouting traffic rules. In reply, Orero and his driver were heard telling Madowo: “Take that video to President William Ruto.”
The exchange escalated with insults, including the term “takataka” (“garbage/trash”) hurled by the driver toward the journalist.
After the verbal confrontation, the MP’s vehicle drove away. Madowo has stated publicly that he felt his actions were necessary to hold public officials accountable under the Traffic Act, which criminalizes driving against traffic flow.
The incident has provoked strong reactions online. Many members of the public condemned the MP, saying his conduct was reckless and showed a disregard for the rules and public safety. Some called it arrogance unbecoming of a lawmaker.
Orero’s office described the incident as an “unnecessary escalation,” arguing that the confrontation could have been handled more diplomatically. As of the latest reports, traffic authorities have not publicly responded to the matter.
In addition, a review of parliamentary records via Mzalendo and other public sources indicates that since his election in August 2022, Peter Orero has had minimal participation in parliamentary debates.
As of October 2025, there is no record of him sponsoring any bill, and he reportedly does not serve on any House committees.
