Lassa Fever Kills 80 In Nigeria

According to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), a total of 80 deaths have been reported across Nigeria as a result of the outbreak of Lassa fever.

According to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), 434 confirmed cases of Lassa fever were reported from 17 states and the federal capital territory in the United States between January and December 8, with 80 deaths documented.

Lassa fever is a disease transmitted to humans through rat urine or feces contaminated food or household objects.

For proper Lassa fever surveillance and response in the country, the NCDC stated it has increased the operations of the national multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary Lassa fever technical working group and created emergency operation centers.

Lassa fever is reportedly transmitted when the saliva, urine and excreta of rats come into contact with humans. In some cases, Lassa fever has similar symptoms as malaria.
