Law Society of Kenya Lauds President Ruto For Trashing Adani Deals

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has successfully challenged proposed Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) involving the controversial Adani Group.

Following legal action initiated on September 9 and October 23, 2024, the High Court has issued a stay on all dealings related to the agreements with the Kenya Airports Authority and KETRACO.

The LSK raised serious concerns about the procurement processes, alleging that they ignored the essential protocols outlined in the Public Private Partnerships Act.

This move was fueled by growing public discontent regarding the integrity and track record of the Adani Group.

In a surprising announcement during a joint parliamentary session on November 21, President William Ruto confirmed the cancellation of both agreements, acknowledging the apprehensions voiced by Kenyans.

The President’s decision has been welcomed by the LSK, which emphasized it aligns with the interests of the public.

While the LSK was prepared to continue legal proceedings, they acknowledged that the government’s concession was a more constructive resolution.

The LSK also urged the government to disclose all financial implications resulting from these agreements and take steps to minimize potential losses to the country.

President William Ruto ordered the immediate cancellation of the planned Adani Group takeover deal of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Ruto at the same time directed the cancellation of the signed deal with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company, Ketraco.

In his State of the Nation address at Parliament, Ruto said this was in view of new evidence by local investigative agencies and information from partner states that link the Indian conglomerate with graft.
