Lawyer and governance commentator Kamotho Waiganjo has commended the SHOFCO Urban Network (SUN) elections in Migori County, describing them as a shining example of inclusive, participatory governance in Kenya.
Waiganjo noted that SUN, part of the broader work of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), empowers residents of informal settlements through education, access to basic services, and civic participation. He highlighted that the elections allow members to choose leaders at ward, constituency, and county levels, ensuring that programmes reflect local priorities and that accountability flows from the grassroots.
He also pointed out that members’ modest contributions not only sustain the network but provide opportunities for training, livelihood support, and meaningful participation in decision-making, embodying the principles of public participation under Article 10 of the Constitution.
Waiganjo added that SUN’s elections stand out for their transparency, inclusivity, and genuine engagement. He praised the diversity of elected leaders, including women, youth, and minority representatives, and suggested that Kenya’s formal institutions could learn from this model, a reminder that democracy thrives when citizens are empowered to take ownership of governance, far beyond casting a vote.
