The lawyer who advised Lionel Messi on his proposed FC Barcelona exit has reportedly resigned as a result of his failed strategy.
Spanish lawyer Jorge Pecourt has reportedly left his role as a partner at Cuatrecasas law firm after his failed attempt to help Messi terminate his contract with Barcelona ultimately caused the company to lose the club as one of their clients.
According to 2Playbook, sources from within the firm have confirmed the legal professional’s resignation, although conflicting reports highlighted by Sport claim that he has, in fact, broken away to start his own player agency.
Pecourt rose to prominence last month when he sent a burofax to Barcelona informing them of Messi’s intention to leave the club, relying on a clause in the players’ contract that allowed him to terminate his deal at the end of every season.
However, the validity of this clause was disputed and, without certainty that he would win the legal battle, Messi conceded that he would remain with the Catalan giants for the 2020/21 season.
