Leeds United Sign Slovenia Defender Jaka Bijol from Udinese Ahead of Premier League Return

Leeds United have strengthened their backline ahead of their Premier League return with the signing of Slovenian international centre-back Jaka Bijol from Italian side Udinese.

The 26-year-old joins for a reported fee of £15 million ($20 million), becoming Leeds’ second signing of the summer transfer window following the arrival of German striker Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer.

Bijol brings considerable experience at both club and international levels. He has earned 63 caps for Slovenia and was instrumental during their UEFA Euro 2024 campaign, where Slovenia held England to a 0-0 draw in the group stage and pushed Portugal to penalties in the round of 16.

“Maybe the biggest day of my career so far, but I’m ready for it,” Bijol said in an interview with the club’s website. “It’s a big challenge for me and the club, but we’re getting ready for it together. I think we’re ready for the Premier League.”

Bijol spent the last three seasons in Serie A with Udinese, making 95 appearances. Prior to his time in Italy, he played for CSKA Moscow, where he featured in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

Leeds United return to the Premier League after a two-year absence, having clinched the Championship title in May on goal difference, finishing level on 100 points with Burnley. The addition of Bijol is seen as a strategic move to solidify the club’s defensive core as they prepare for the challenges of top-flight football.
