Leipzig Fire Head Coach Tedesco After UCL Loss

The Italian coach, 36, had been in charge since December last year, guiding Leipzig to success in last season's German Cup.

RB Leipzig has parted ways with coach Domenico Tedesco “with immediate effect” following a 4-1 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League opener, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday.

“Assistant coaches Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky have also left the club. RB Leipzig will announce his successor in due course,” the club said in a statement.

The Italian coach, 36, had been in charge since December last year, guiding Leipzig to success in last season’s German Cup, which was the first major trophy in the club history, and the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they lost to Rangers.

However, Tuesday’s defeat to Shakhtar just added up to a negative series across all competitions of three defeats, two draws and two wins in seven games this season.

Leipzig also lost the season opener German Super Cup to Bayern Munich.

Leipzig’s upcoming schedule includes hosting Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday and a trip to defending champion Real Madrid in the Champions League next Wednesday.

Shakhtar came to Leipzig with a weakened squad after losing most of its overseas players following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the team scored from four of its five shots on goal.
