Kikuyu Council: LGBTQ Unacceptable In Our Cultures

The Kikuyu council of elders, chaired by national chairman Wachira Kiago, has spoken out against Kenya’s most recent court judgement in favour of LGBTQ rights.

The Kenyan Supreme Court declared that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) group has the freedom of association.

The council chairman Wachira Kiago declared that the council was “completely against this verdict” since it went against their community’s ethos.

He went on to explain that the council requested that their traditions and ideals be respected.

The council urged all parents to warn their children not to tolerate “bad behaviour,” and expressed fear that permitting such behaviour may lead to the annihilation of African generations.

Acceptance of LGBTQ rights, according to Kiago, was a foreign way of life that was incompatible with African culture and customs.

“We will not let our people lose their culture, and we oppose the court verdict,” Wachira stated.

Three Supreme Court justices, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Justice Smokin Wanjala, and Justice Njoki Ndung’u, ruled in favour of the majority.

“It would be illegal to limit the freedom to associate by denying registration of an organization solely on the basis of the applicant’s sexual orientation,” they concluded.

In their majority verdict, the justices stated that the lower court’s decision to deny members of Kenya’s LGBTQ community the ability to register as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) was discriminatory.
