Liberia’s senate has confirmed Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh as the country’s new chief justice.
She takes over for Francis Saye Korkpor, who is retiring this month after attaining the constitutional retirement age of 70.
Justice Yuoh is Liberia’s third female chief justice in the country’s 175-year history, and the first since 2003.
The court has stayed silent about her age.
She ascends to the highest judicial position with only 13 months till the next presidential and general elections.
Justice Yuoh was one of the Supreme Court’s two female judges at the time.
Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, a male criminal court judge, has been nominated to take her position on the bench.
Frances Johnson Allison and Gloria Musu Scott were Liberia’s past two female chief justices.
