The State Department for Livestock Development has launched public stakeholders’ consultation forums to collect views on the proposed animal production and technicians bill 2023.
The bill aims at recognizing professions within livestock production and promoting the welfare of livestock.
Speaking during the launch, PS for state department for livestock development Harry Kimtai has said the bill will also regulate activities within the livestock sub sector.
“The person who will be handling the livestock will be known, will be recognized by the law and that person will know his or her role when dealing with the livestock”, he said.
Once the bill has passed in the national assembly, the professions will be able to handle the livestock sector from production, veterinary services and public health services.
Kimtai has said lack of recognized professionals in this field has led to high cost of production of meat in the country.
According to the PS, the country lost 2.5 million herds of cattle during the prolonged drought season, and added the loss incurred would not have reached that figure if at all there were professionals to guide the farmers on numbers of livestock to keep and the kind of feeds to give their livestock.
