The Catholic Diocese of Lodwar has issued a fresh plea for solidarity as Turkana County grapples with worsening humanitarian conditions.
Bishop John Mbinda said the diocese faces “urgent needs that stretch from the most basic necessities,” including food, healthcare, and education.
He noted that many children in the region have never attended school, and residents must travel long distances for basic medication like Panadol.
Infrastructure challenges, such as impassable roads, continue to isolate remote communities, while climate pressures from recurrent droughts to rising waters in Lake Turkana have worsened displacement and hunger.
The presence of refugees in Kakuma camp has further strained already limited resources.
“The government should hear this; the people of Kenya should hear this,” Bishop Mbinda said, urging well-resourced dioceses and supporters to provide assistance through prayer, donations, and material support.
Despite the difficulties, he praised the resilience of Turkana’s people, saying they remain hopeful and joyful even after going days without food. He also expressed gratitude to those funding scholarships, clergy housing, and medical aid, saying such help gives hope amid hardship.
Covering nearly 77,000 square kilometers, Lodwar Diocese is among Kenya’s largest and most underserved mission territories and continues to rely heavily on external support to sustain its pastoral and social programs.
