In anticipation of possible protests at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Tuesday, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has issued a warning to passengers to arrive early to avoid potential delays.
The warning comes amid reports that Gen Z protesters are planning to storm the airport, with some social media posts indicating that they may shift their usual demonstrations in the Central Business District (CBD).
This marks the fourth week of protests by Kenyan Gen Zs against the Finance Bill 2024, which has led to clashes with authorities and the burning of a section of Parliament. The protests have also resulted in injuries and fatalities among demonstrators.
The KAA advised passengers scheduled to fly out on Tuesday to arrive at the airport early to allow for additional security checks and protocols.
Passengers are also urged to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight information.
“We understand that this may cause inconvenience, but we want to ensure the safety and security of all our passengers,” said a KAA on their social media handle.
The protests, which began last month, have seen thousands of young Kenyans take to the streets across major towns, demanding that President William Ruto listen to their demands.
As tensions build ahead of Tuesday’s planned protests, authorities are bracing for a potential surge in unrest. The KAA has assured that it is working closely with security agencies to ensure a smooth operation at JKIA.
In the meantime, passengers are advised to plan ahead and arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare.
