Low Voter Turnout Experienced As Mombasa Holds Repeat Poll

despite having over 600,000 registered voters, the region is experiencing low voter turnout.

The voting for the next Mombasa governor has begun in many polling stations across Mombasa County.

Most polling stations opened on time at 6 a.m.

The governor’s race has attracted seven candidates.

The race is being led by Abdulswamad Nassir of the ODM and Hassan Omar of the UDA.

However, despite having over 600,000 registered voters, the region is experiencing low voter turnout.

The polling stations in Nyali Constituency, which has 195 polling stations and over 124,000 registered voters, remained deserted.

As of 7 a.m. Monday, Maweni Primary School, which has over 5,000 registered voters, and Ziwa La Ng’ombe Primary, which has over 7,000 registered voters, had very few voters lined up to vote.

Tumaini Primary School, which is also in the Nyali constituency, has a low voter turnout.

The same has been reported in Kisauni, Mvita, Likoni, Jomvu, and Changamwe, the remaining five constituencies.

Nassir is expected to vote at Mvita Primary around 9 a.m., while Omar will vote at Kandherboy Dispensary within Mvita.

Outgoing governor Hassan Joho has voted in Nyali at Uwanja wa Mbuzi.

The elections were postponed on August 9, the date of the General Election after what the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said was ballot papers mix-up, and were again pushed forward on August 23 after the commission cited intimidation and harassment of its staff.

The polls being held are Mombasa and Kakamega governor elections as well as MP races in Kacheliba (West Pokot County), Pokot South (West Pokot County), Rongai (Nakuru County), and Kitui Rural (Kitui County).
